More Vintage Blue Onyx Pearl
Pictures sent in (July 2013) by Tom Schlitter from Fort Colins, Colorado of his Ludwig snare. Looking great Tom! [fblike]
This Ludwig snare is one that never was. I had originally obtained a new old stock Blue/Olive (B/O) without a serial number. Some on-line research revealed that Ludwig used these badges in this configuration for a brief time in the early 1970’s. I have a catalog from the time period, and saw that Ludwig had in their snare drum selection one called a “School Festival”. It was a 14×6 size with 16 separate mini “Classic” lugs and a “P-85” strainer..
I had a new take-off pair of black nickel Gretsch hoops and purchased all new lugs from a local Ludwig dealer. New tension rods from Gibraltar and a nice used strainer/butt plate set on eBay along with a new Ludwig wire set completed this drum.
“Jammin’ Sam” had sold me a complete wrap set for a Slingerland kit in this attractive “Blue Agate Pearl”. I ended up not using the snare wrap because I located a correct COB “Sound King” Slingy snare drum. Since another glance at my original Ludwig catalog revealed that this Blue Onyx wrap was never available on Ludwig drums, I never-the-less decided to wrap my new Keller snare shell in this beautiful finish.
As you can see, when you follow the instructions provided by Sam, you’ll get professional results like this. I’m very pleased with the outcome, and have contacted Sam again for another wrap set for my 1971 Gretsch “Broadcaster II” kit.
I’m sure these will come out great. I’ll send pictures after it’s done.
